Pictures of FT-IR monitoring on Mt. Etna

Using a pathlength of over 500 m, we monitored fumarole gases as they rolled down the side of the mountain and over the lip of a plateau on the side of the volcano. We sat here for hours, collecting hundreds of spectra from which we could derive the ratios of SO2 to HCl.
This picture shows the FT-IR equipment fairly well. The FT-IR instrument can be powered from any 12 VDC source and, in this, case, we used the battery in the LandRover.
